Upon first read, you probably won’t find his article very impressive, but it falls into the category of “profoundly simple” – it’s likely a very subtle change in the way you currently ask for things in your life.

Right now, your requests, wishes, dreams and maybe even prayers – probably fall into one or more of these descriptions –

  • External – “Please don’t let it rain on my wedding day.”
  • Event based – “I want to run a marathon”
  • Hope based – “I hope I can get my book published.”
  • If-then based – “When my kids get back in school, then I’ll have more time for myself.”

These all have one thing in common – they’re totally out of our control.

By developing goals that “get past” the event or the scenario that you can’t control and asking yourself how you want the result to look and feel for you, you’ll better be able to define success in a more controllable way.

It will also be more clear to you what steps you need to take to get to that point.
